![]() ![]() What started off as a slightly clumsy and generally directionless action romp with only a mature tone to differentiate it eventually came into its own and emerged as a visually stunning, well written, memorable action-drama complete with strong characters and an emotionally investing plot. If you were one of the people who dropped Garo back in 2014 because the plot seemed a little too aimless, this is a PSA: Y’done goofed. During his search, he comes across Leon, whose interactions with the prince will forever change both of their fates. To return home, Alfonso sets out to find the help and strength he needs to reclaim the throne. But before he can do so, he is double-crossed and banished from his own kingdom. ![]() Although German knows Leon's will is wavering, he decides to bring Leon along to continue his training.Īs German and Leon head to the capital, the king's amiable son Alfonso San Valiante struggles to find a solution to the growing Horror threat. His father German, known as Zoro the Shadow Cutting Knight, is still training Leon when he is called to investigate the upsurge of Horrors in the kingdom's capital. Though he possesses great power, he struggles to overcome the hatred he bears from his mother's death at the hands of the kingdom. One such Makai Knight is 17-year-old Leon Luis who inherits the legendary armor of the Golden Knight Garo from his mother. Known as the Makai Knights and Alchemists, they have a strong will to protect people from Horrors, demons who possess souls plagued by sadness and pain. Unbeknownst to the citizens, the targets of these witch hunts are the secret protectors of humanity. Seventeen years later, their pursuit is still growing in both size and brutality. I've not checked out the two-part special which followed yet, but I'm looking forward to it! Incidentally, fans of this show should also check out the excellent "Sh15uya" and the amazingly daft (but utterly wonderful) "Cutie Honey the Live", both of which feature Mark Musashi, cool fights and crazy costumes. In the name of the king, the Valiante Kingdom launched hunts to exterminate users of witchcraft. There is a little in the way of blood, horror and mild nudity, but overall this is a thoroughly enjoyable show which can be enjoyed by anyone with a taste for action. ![]() The characters are well-played and nicely handled, and the fighting featuring the phenomenal Mark Musashi) is wickedly fun - a ballistic blend of martial arts, suitmation and CG which somehow always manages to look cool! The dialogue is snappy and amusing, and the story is seen through to a satisfying conclusion. ![]() From this simple beginning the plot develops nicely (if rather predictably) though the introduction of new Horrors, new powers, bigger battles, and most importantly a second and very different Makai Knight, Zero (Fujita Ray), who seems to bear a grudge towards Kouga. but Kouga can't bring himself to kill her, and instead lets her live on the pretext that she will act as bait for Horrors and make his hunting easier. During a battle, an aspiring artist named Kaoru (Hijii Mika) is spattered by the blood of a horror, and by the law of the Makai Knights she must be killed immediately. Not being a fan of sentai shows, I was unsure whether this would live up to its reputation as a tokusatsu show for adults (being developed by some of the Kamen Rider team), but the tag-line is true and it is, indeed, a Hyper Midnight Action Drama! The premise is a straightforward mangaesque excuse for action: Saejima Kouga (Konishi Hiroki) is a Makai Knight, who is sworn to protect humanity from supernatural creatures called Horrors, who possess and devour humans. ![]()
